This is just my opinion but it seems like each generation has their own version of the stereotypical "bad boy". This always changes over time.

It just so happens that the lovely people in the media and "music industry" (aka garbage factory) found in the early and mid 90s that if they sold an image of what black people are supposed to be (in the form of what they used to call 'gangster rap') to white, suburban american teens who had limited contact with black people due to economic segregation, then they would make a shitload of money off of this rebellious image.

Of course the image itself is and was bullshit and creates a huge problem for how people perceive of themselves as well as others. I know a lot of dudes who used to try to live up to all that hype just because they were black, and it wasn't really who they were. At the same time there were all these idiots out there who thought just because you were black you had to fit into this silly ass stereotype that a bunch of marketing execs promoted to death.

People bought into the scam that black = hip hop = rebellious criminal, and certain people who still believe that to be true think that they are proving something to other people as a statement of who they are.

The only problem is the only thing they are proving is how ignorant and incapable they are of using their own minds and being themselves.

It doesn't matter who you fall in love with or who you date if you actually like them, but sitting there and dating people on the false basis that you are rebellious perpetuates a racist lie.
