not sure how thats going to work, but not a bad idea anyway. While some people are going to whine and bitch about it, they need to stop thinking about "me me me" for a minute and actually do some good. Hopefully, if that did go through, it would improve the lives of not only the kids, but the people they are helping. The sad thing is, a lot of parents are going to whine about it because that means they have to actually try to discipline their children and teach them morals. It's been proven that helping others can actually decrease depression and all that.

If you follow the link, he outlines 4 new "corps" to be introduced. Unless I am seeing this in the wrong way, the sheer bureaucracy that is going to need to be introduced to organize this will be immense.

We had to do 40 hours community service to graduate from high school. It was 40 hours over 4 years; not 50 hours per year through BOTH middle school and high school.

I can't even begin to describe the amount of trouble people ran into in their final year, scrambling to find somewhere, ANYWHERE, to sign that they had completed their hours.

Anyways. We will see, maybe he has some sort of implementation I haven't thought of yet.

It should. it's is one of the things that our lacks. If more people supported the various community agencies then those communities would be in much better shape. schools need major support. It isn't that hard to find places to volunteer, and 40-50 hours is not really that much.

if you broke it down into a few hours over time...it really isn't that much. And I'm sure kids would do this with their friends and find ways to make it fun. Or even have it be connected with school somehow.

or they can do what probably 80% of my high school did..

i dont agree with forcing people to volunteer though.. it defeats the whole purpose of the word "volunteer" it is nice to see people doing volunteer work though.. it only benefits people and its a very caring/generous way of doing things..

being forced to do work for free beyond your own will has its own other meaning which i dont agree with.. but sadly a lot of people these days are bums and would rather sit on their couch watching the seemingly endless reality shows than helping their neighbour who is to old to be doing yard work..

yeah. I was in americorps a couple the last two years. we had all day service projects where kids from the high scools came out and helped us with planting trees in a local low-income neighborhood. It was really great. and there are so many projects like that. Most AmeriCorps programs look for volunteers as a part of their requirements for the grants. Especially in Washington state.

that is a good point, but using the words "community service" isn't so much of a contradiction, which is what it is.

People who break the law have to do community service a lot of times, and some sports/clubs require it, as do honor roll programs and greek organizations.

Fuck that. If I'm getting mandatory community service for going to college, I'm not getting two shits about getting busted for drinking.

i had to do 40 hours of community service my senior year in high school (i moved to a new school my last year). you have to do a certain amount in each year in HS in order to graduate. if you didn't complete it, you were held back.

Oh, I'm more than happy to help others...when it's my choice of who and when, and how, and how much, and for how long.
I've been planning to do two years, then four years, then six years, then eight in college. In steps, saving money, seeing how far I really want to go with it. If I make it to my doctorate, I'm going to stay a student for the rest of my life.
Mandatory community service is not in the plan of going to school, holding a job, and keeping a family. I've also always wanted to homeschool my children. Yes, BUSY - always.

see, now thats where play on words just make it sound like it's not actually a GOOD thing. Even if you do volunteer, most people dont, when they should. I think it would teach kids good morals, and would teach them a sense of humility in a word that is obsessed in getting paid for helping other people.

I think it would too. I think a lot of things would benefit humanity. That isn't the point. People need to find their own way. Unlike liberals, I don't have the obsessive need to improve people against their will.

I will have compassion, but only if i choose to. I wont be forced to do anything.
