Bio
BubbyJones; A Lesson in Character
Dave Argbright

There is probably nobody at a racetrack that can be more intimidating , but i'll give Bubba alot of credit : i've spoken with him a few times over the years , and never once has he blew me off. It doesn't matter if he's mad , happy , sad , dissappointed , tired , bored , or whatever he has been accessible. I recall one particular night when he took one of the most devistating flips in many's memory, rolling all the way down the back stretch at Memphis Motorsport Park; the drivers were more then hard on him that evening not giving him any slack , after the horrindous crash everybody approached his car expecting the worst. He set there laughing an looked around an said those words that gave me chills to this day, " I may be a newbie round' here , but i ain't done yet!" , and in those words we all got a peak at the heart this kid possesses.

Just like all of us , Bubba has changed a little bit through the years. The racing intensity has never waned , of course , but other elements of his life have changed now then seasons past. He has began to accept losing a little better then he used to; as a matter of fact he gets over it rather quickly. He has gone from being a bit of a loner in the early years , to playing his part as mentor to many young racers , willing to provide advice and guidance as well as selling them used parts at a generous price. With so many other sports in our world consumed by hate , greed , money , and power; he is one of the few positive role models our next generations will have.

He is still very quiet, for the most part , and even though I've known him through watching him grow up infront of all our own eyes , I dont ever try to guess whats going on behind those focused fiery brown eyes. He still remains very independant, and i don't care what the circumstances nobody - i mean NOBODY - pushes him around. But at the same time he also gives everything he has , one story comes to recent memory , the 2 day event at Canton Stadium in Central Mississippi , he won the first night from the 7th row , upon post race interview he was quoted as saying " Well don't ask me , the crew are the real stars tonight! They earned it , let them have it." , as he walked off the podium; and returned to the pits to begine work on the night 2 setups.

To simply describe him as "a natural" greatly diminishes everything he has meant to this sport and other faucets of his success. To be quite honest nobody has more devoted their lives to succeding in a sport he wasn't meant to be "a threat" in over the years. The World could use so many more of him. If heart , soul , and sheer willpower won races; he would still be undefeated. It's a safe bet to say that we will never see that kind of passion and fire again ; at least not in our lifetimes , and I dont mind being grateful that I was luckily enough to have witnessed it , so Congradulations Mr. Jones , on a job well done!

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Speedway
Not a creature was stirring, not even a blade.
The pit gates were chained and bolted with care,
But to no avail as the ASCS racers would soon be there.

The promoter’s kids were all snuggled in their beds,
With visions of clay-spewing Sprint Cars screaming through their heads.
His wife in her Sam 15 tee, and he in his Tony Bruce hoodie,
Rilat, Chappell, Martens and scores more were on the way for a Winter-time goodie.

Then out in the parking lot there arose such a clatter,
The crisp winter air was suddenly filled with racer’s chatter.
He sprung to his ticket counter in such a great flash,
Just in time to see Toby Brown lead the pit gate crash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
The track was miraculously clear and ready to go.
Then what to his incredulous eyes did appear on the lawn,
The head of ASCS himself, it was Emmett Hahn.

An endless line of sparkling sprint cars did enter,
The American Sprint Cars on Tour was front stage and center.
The sweet scent of methanol filled the air as they readied for game,
Emmett tugged on his belt loops and called them by name.

Now Gary Wright! Now Ray Allen Kulhanek! Now Sean McClelland!
On Billy Alley! On Gary Taylor! On Bubba Jones! Champions all.
Here’s Darren Stewart, Toby Chapman, Danny Jennings, Eric Miller and more,
Let’s take to the track and see who stands tall.

Heats and Qualifiers, who will go forward,
Those that can pass will seize the reward.
Then to the feature we will go,
To see who is tonight’s star of the show.

The promoter smiled with glee as here came the fans,
They came from every direction, some even driving vans.
Hot dogs and burgers for the kids, it was oh so nice,
And for the adults there was beer on ice.

The glimmering sprint cars circled the track,
For on this night there were no bombers to pack.
ASCS Sprint Cars only, a fan’s delight,
The common question was: Who can beat Gary Wright?

Heat races started as the lights went green,
Just another great dirt trackin’ scene.
Heroic moves and spinetingling slidejobs were the norm,
As from the surrounding hilltops echoed the storm.

With heats and qualifiers in the books,
It would be a true Race of the Ages from all looks.
Twin B’s would fill the feature field,
And from that point on, nobody would yield.

From the bleachers the faithful ASCS fans cheered on their heroes,
For on this December night there were no zeroes.
The feature offered up plenty of thrills,
And a couple of hearty drivers walked away from nasty spills.

As the checkered flag flew, there was a booming ovation,
And from victory lane, there was much elation.
With trophy girls on each arm, the winner smiled in the light,
Light from the cameras on this magical night.

The promoter smiled and shook the fans’ hands,
My goodness, he wondered, who will pick up all these cans?
As the racers left, the promoter shut down for the night,
But I heard him exclaim before he shut down the lights,

“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”
